Understanding Place Value
Discover what each digit in a number is really worth, from ones and tens to hundreds and thousands.

Every digit in a number has a value depending on its position. In the number 428, the 4 is worth 400 (four hundreds), the 2 is worth 20 (two tens), and the 8 is worth 8 (eight ones).
We use base-10 blocks and place value charts to make this visual, then practise partitioning numbers (for example, 428 = 400 + 20 + 8) and building numbers from their parts.
