Using Descriptive Language
Learn to use figurative language — similes, metaphors and personification — to bring writing to life.

Descriptive language helps readers picture a scene or feel an emotion. A simile compares two things using 'like' or 'as' (e.g. 'as brave as a lion'), a metaphor makes a direct comparison (e.g. 'the classroom was a zoo'), and personification gives human qualities to non-human things (e.g. 'the wind whispered').
We practise identifying these techniques in extracts, then use them in our own descriptive paragraphs.
